The Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at Johns Hopkins University has introduced an application to facilitate the automated calculation of LDL cholesterol levels using the method outlined by Martin and his colleagues in the Journal of the American Medical Association (doi:10.1001/jama.2013.280532).
The app requires three direct measures from the standard lipid profile: total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides for accurate calculation.
Unlike the conventional approach of applying a fixed divisor to triglycerides, the Martin equation customizes the calculation by assigning a personalized factor to determine an individual's LDL cholesterol level.
This method, widely endorsed by respected clinical guidelines like the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology, has undergone rigorous validation and implementation.
The app presents results and suggestions with the aim of providing information rather than replacing clinical expertise. The decision on therapeutic interventions should be tailored to each patient and reached through consultation between the patient and their healthcare provider.
Developed by Dr. Seth S. Martin and his team at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center, this app showcases an LDL-C calculation method honed through dedicated research efforts in collaboration with Dr. Ted W. James, Chris Doyle, and Manar Alhamdy from Johns Hopkins' Tech Innovation Center.
Entities considering commercial utilization or integration of the LDL-C calculator are required to obtain a license from Johns Hopkins University. For further details, contact JHTT-Communications@jhu.edu.
